Copperhead Snakes
By Owen Jones of The Real Way.com
Copperhead snakes account for a disproportionate amount of snake bites in the USA, especially in Florida, because they usually strike without warning, unlike the rattlesnake for example. The good news is that their venom is unlikely to kill a healthy adult, although it is worth getting medical attention as soon as possible as you might be allergic. Copperheads are unusual snakes in that their colouring often varies within the species so much so that correct identification of this snake can be very difficult. The copperhead thrives on small animals such as frogs, birds, insects, lizards and the like, but comes across humans because it likes to laze in the sun on rocks, walls and logs. It usually blends very well with its surroundings. The copperhead can be distinguished by its stoutish shape and its neck which appears quite distinct from its body. Its body has a pale cross-band tan pattern that gets darker in the middle and on the sides. Copperhead snakes have pale bellies, similar to its background, but they sometimes appear pretty white too. It often has a stripe on its head and brown dots too marking the pits of its 6th sense. As with all snakes, the copperhead does not really want anything to do with humans, so if you give it an escape route it will probably take it. After all, it cannot eat you and it does not want to waste its venom on a pointless strike as it can take 6-24 hrs to create enough more to kill prey for food. Let snakes live, they keep the rats down too!
